The experts at OnBuy’s Toy department decided to look into some of the most valuable toys and games that could get you thinking about how you could build an exciting business in this category and start earning your fortune.
Which type of toys could make you the most money?
Trading cards may appear at the bottom of this league table, but they are not to be ignored. The Honus Wagner 1909 card sold for a whopping £2.9 million ($3.8m)! and other cards of value are Magic: The Gathering Alpha Black Lotus card, Yu-Gi-Oh Black Luster Soldier card And Pokémon Holographic First Edition Charizard. So whether you already have some trading cards that are worth sorting through, or even looking at buying at auction from house clearances for some hidden gems.
Comic books are a hit among Brits thanks to their visually pleasing graphics and intense plots. Not only are they popular to read, they are also big in the investment game thanks to the money they can return, so it’s no wonder Google searches for comic books amass 284,200 each month!
The first edition of Action Comics from 1938 sold on eBay in 2014 for just over £2.4 million ($3.2m), when the bidder had only put it up for 99 cents (76p)! Comic books can be found at house clearances, charity shops, comic book stores, and can be a great investment with the chance of earning a small fortune. The mere mention of a Barbie doll can send any adult on a trip down memory lane, as many Brits spent hours upon hours playing and accessorising the iconic dolls during their childhood. But who would have thought owning a collection of Barbies could earn you a small fortune today.
Our research can reveal that the most expensive Barbie doll ever sold was designed by fine jewellery designer Stefano Canturi and went for just under a quarter of a million pounds (£231,000 or $302,500) in 2010. The rare doll, which featured emerald-cut pink diamonds, was made and auctioned to raise money for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

A the centre of a British home are their favourite board games, and as more are being developed every year, the classics will always be a goldie to Brits! According to our research, the original Monopoly game, made in 1933 is the most expensive board game of all time with one being sold at an auction for a staggering £112,000 ($146,500).
Disney VHS Tapes
Even though not many people own a video tape player today VHS tapes are one of the most popular investments due to the money you can make from selling them on to collectors – particularly Disney VHS tape.
If you get your hands on the Disney Black Diamond Collection you may be in luck as, according to our research, a “Beauty and the Beast Black Diamond” VHS tape was sold on eBay for an impressive £11,478 ($15,000)!

Disney are constantly churning out exciting new animated movies to capture the hearts of both children and adults alike, and they almost always release a small range of limited edition dolls to accompany its release. it’s well worthwhile doing a bit of research to see what Disney have in the pipeline and getting your hands on one of the limited edition dolls before they’re snapped up by collectors. You may well be investing in the next box office smash hit and, provided you keep your figure in mint box condition, you could end up sitting on a tidy profit!
Rare Funko Pop Figures
Funko Pop collectable figures have taken the world by storm with that iconic adorable face. Even though many of these toys are mass-produced, Funko Pops occasionally release very limited figures that can go up into the thousands in resale value. As a nod to their loyal fanbase, many of these super rare figures are released at San Diego Comic Con, so make sure you get down there early to snap up all the best ones!
By limited, we mean limited. One of the most coveted Funk Pops by collectors is the Dumbo (Clown Face & Gold) figure. With only 48 pieces released, this super rare Funko is worth up to £2,500! Even some of the larger releases, such as the limited edition Boba Fett figure (with 480 in existence), have a resale value of almost £400. As all the limited edition models are sold at regular retail price (around £15), that’s quite the return!
McDonald’s Happy Meal Toys
Yes, even these mini meal companions can be worth a hefty price in a few years’ time!
A full set of 1996 101 Dalmatians Happy Meal toys in their original fold-out display box could get you anywhere between £50-£200, depending on condition. Even some of the more recent Happy Meal toys, such as the 2013 Jerry the Minion toy can reach just over £100.
We couldn’t think of a better excuse to treat yourself to a McDonald’s more often!
Limited Edition My Little Pony Toys
Since launching in the ‘80s, My Little Pony has been captivating the hearts of horse lovers across the world with many revivals over the years that has seen a dramatic resurgence of its popularity. With each revival comes rare and exclusive ponies that could be worth a shed load over the next few years.
For example, the notoriously hard-to-find Mimic the Twinkle Eye Unicorn toy is often sold online for anything up to £200, even without her original packaging!
