eBay tells us how to take advantage of hot weather

With the weather warming back up for the forseeable future, eBay have let us know what search terms and products experienced a boom during April and June 2020, and July 2019 when it was unseasonably warm to help customers to know what will likely be popular if the hot weather continues.

Mike Klinkhammer, Director of Ad Sales EU at eBay, said: “When the sun comes out and the heat cranks up, people are inspired to invest in their home and garden – and that will be the case more than ever this summer, as shoppers spend more time at home. Our insights highlight the huge role weather plays in people’s moods and shopping habits, and there’s huge spend to be won by brands that can capitalise on this mood and moment. This is why it’s so important for brands to stay on their toes and harness the latest insights that allow them to ensure their targeting is attuned to shopper interests in the ‘here and now’.”

So what were the popular search terms for 2020?
  • ‘garden and patio furniture’ shot up 196% YoY
  • ‘barbecues’ increased 256%
  • 'pressure washers' increased 179%
  • 'hot tubs' increased 784%
  • 'sunloungers' increased 141%
  • 'sandpits' increased 139%
Sandpits in especially interesting and we'd predict likely to continue as concerns over hygiene will remain for public parks even as they re-open.

Based on 2019 there are also some quite interesting insights:-
  • when the temperature got above 28 degrees there was a surge in 'curtains' as a search, assumedly as the sweaty retreated inside
  • when the downpours started at the end of July after the highest ever UK temperature the search for 'wellies' increased by 297%
